As the year draws to a close, I want to share a few words with you on this silent night. If part of you feels blue this Christmas— as if there is no peace on earth, because hate is strong and mocks the song of peace on earth— I pray that all who are faithful will be joyful and triumphant on this holy night.

For many years ago, away in a manger in Bethlehem, herald angels sang of Joy to the World. They proclaimed: “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” Luke 2:10-12 What child is this?

Though His mother may have known in part and seen in part, Mary could not yet know that the glory to the newborn King— first revealed as a holy infant, so tender and mild— would one day lead to the old rugged cross. For the world, in sin and error pining, longed for redemption. And still, heaven and nature sing of the glories of His righteousness and the wonders of His love.

So whether you are dreaming of a White Christmas, or your home is fully decked with boughs of holly, may you feel a thrill of hope— and may your weary soul remember its worth. For God is not dead, nor does he sleep. He rules the world with truth and grace, for Christ is the Lord. Praise his name forever.
