Weekly Market Commentary 10/05/26

U.S. stocks were mixed last week, with the Dow falling 1.3%, the S&P 500 down 0.3%, the Russell 2000 down 0.2%, while the Nasdaq gained 0.5%.

The biggest story was rising Treasury yields. The 10-year yield climbed to 5.28%, its highest level of the year, keeping pressure on the broader market. At the same time, technology and semiconductor stocks continued to lead, with the semiconductor index gaining 3.7%.

Investors also received softer economic data. September payrolls increased by just 29,000, well below expectations, while unemployment rose to 4.2%. Cooler inflation data and comments from Fed officials reduced expectations for another rate hike in October.

But market breadth remained a concern. Eight of eleven S&P 500 sectors declined, and the equal-weight S&P 500 fell 0.7%, showing that gains remained concentrated in large technology companies.

Looking ahead, investors will focus on the September FOMC minutes, ISM services, jobless claims, consumer sentiment, and Treasury auctions.
