Weekly Market Commentary 10/12/26
The Major Markets closed mostly higher last week. The S&P 500 led the pack with a gain of 1.15%, the Dow rose 0.9%, and the Nasdaq added 0.6%. The Russell 2000, however, fell 0.9%, as smaller companies continued to face pressure.
Possibly one of the more encouraging developments last week was the broader market participation. Nine of the eleven S&P 500 sectors finished higher. Furthermore, the equal-weighted S&P 500 outperformed the traditional index, as gains spread beyond the largest technology stocks.
The biggest weakness came from semiconductor and AI-related stocks. Renewed questions about the revenue supporting AI infrastructure spending pushed the semiconductor index down 4.3% for the week.
Interest rates also remained in focus. The ten-year Treasury yield briefly reached 5.36%, its highest level of the year, before retreating to 5.24% by Friday.
Looking ahead, investors will focus on third-quarter earnings, particularly from major banks and technology companies. The key question is whether earnings growth can support current valuations as market leadership continues to broaden.
