The S.T.E.P. Exercise

Have you ever paused to ask yourself what truly motivates you? When we think about our goals, our careers, and our  , we often focus strictly on the numbers. But true planning starts deeper than that.

Back in 1943, psychologist Abraham Maslow introduced a framework ranking human requirements into a five-tier pyramid. It starts at the base with basic physiological needs—like air, water, and food—moves up through safety, love and belonging, and esteem, all the way to the top: self-actualization, the desire to become the most that one can be.

To help you connect your core motivations with your life and financial goals, we use a simple yet powerful exercise called the S.T.E.P. Method. Grab a quiet moment and a sheet of paper, because we’re going to break down personal purpose into four key success areas: Spiritual, Things, Experiences, and People.

Let’s start with S—Spiritual. Now, that word can mean something very precise to some, and feel more abstract to others. If it feels abstract, simply ask yourself: What renews my spirit? What is the source of my inspiration?

In The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey writes that whatever is at the center of our life becomes the source of our security, guidance, wisdom, and power. Whether your center is family, work, money, or faith, identifying your core driver is critical to understanding where your true passion comes from.

Next up is T—Things. Let’s face it: all of us, to some degree, are possession-centered. We work hard to accumulate things we want—whether that’s wealth, financial security, a home, cars, recreational vehicles, or art.

When reflecting on this area, ask yourself two vital questions: First, What things do I want that I don’t have today?  But just as importantly: What things do I have today that I don’t want. Sometimes, the possessions we hold onto actually weigh us down and prevent us from moving forward. And that same second question may tap into other areas of our life.

Moving on to E—Experiences. To truly live life well is to experience it. Think about the moments that have shaped you.

Ask yourself: What experiences in my life do I cherish the most, and why? And looking forward, what do I still want to experience someday? Whether it’s travel, adventure, or personal milestones on your bucket list, getting in touch with these desires reveals what you value most.

Finally, we look at P—People. Think about the people in your life: in the past, the present, and the future.

Are there mentors who helped shape you? People you want to support, or wish you could spend more time with? Are there people you need to thank? Our connections with others often evoke our strongest emotions and serve as our biggest life drivers. Consider those feelings, and decide how you want to channel them using your time and resources.
